Forest began fencing at the age of 10.  Coached by fencing Master Chris Pullo at Seacoast Fencing Club, as a high school junior Forest was a finalist at numerous North American Cups and at the Junior Olympics. In 1997, he captained his team to win the United States junior national gold medal.

Recruited to fence at the University of Notre Dame, Forest achieved a record of over 150 victories and was honored as an All-American athlete. He captained the men's Irish fencing team after their NCAA team victory in 2003.  He and his sister Kerry, as well as two cousins, Kevin and Scott Eriksen, are all Division 1 NCAA All-Americans, and still fence to this day.

Forest's parents Michael and Yvonne Walton both fenced in college. Yvonne is a decorated United States Veteran World Team bronze medalist.

Forest is employed as an architect at Duncan G. Stroik Architect, LLC, in downtown South Bend, Indiana.  His wife and two of his four children have also taken up the sport of fencing.
